FAQ

What is in Mike’s Way at Jersey Mike’s?

Mike’s Way contains red onions, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, red wine vinegar and olive oil blend (called “The Juice), and different spices. You can order this on any sub or you can make this at home.

What are the spices in Mike’s Way?

There are three spices in Mike’s Way: salt, oregano, and optional black pepper.

Why does Jersey Mike’s taste so good?

Jersey Mike’s tastes so good because they use high-quality ingredients and fresh vegetables. Subs and sandwiches are only as good as the ingredients they are made with!

Jersey Mikes Mike’s Way Ingredients

All you need are a few simple ingredients that you can find at any grocery store.

  • Iceburg Lettuce: Shredded.
  • Tomatoes: Fresh, juicy tomatoes. Buy tomatoes on the vine if you can find them, those are the best for authentic east coast-style subs
  • Red Onion: Make sure to cut it into thin slices.
  • Oil and Vinegar Mixture: Adds an exquisite zing that is SO delicious. You can make this mixture at home, too. The recipe is down below.
  • Salt: I use kosher salt.
  • Oregano: Dried oregano. Fresh oregano can work and is also better since it will be more aromatic.
  • Black Pepper (Optional): Only added if the customer says so.

Make sure that you pick the highest quality ingredients when you go grocery shopping.

How To Make Jersey Mikes Mike’s Way Recipe At Home

Step One: Cut the vegetables. Shred the iceberg lettuce. Set aside.
Step Two: Build the sub. Add cheese, then meats. Toast if you’re in the mood for that (toasting is completely optional).
Step Three: Add Vegetables to the sub. Order: lettuce, tomatoes, onions.
Step Four: Add seasonings such as salt, oregano, and optional black pepper.
Step Five: Add oil and vinegar mixture. It is 2 ounces for half a sub or four ounces for a full sub.

Jersey Mike’s Olive Oil Blend

The olive oil blend at Jersey Mike’s is a mixture of vegetable oil (canola oil and/or soybean oil), and olive oil (source: The Jersey Mike’s website).

The Jersey Mikes website does not list the exact measurements for the olive oil blend. However, past Jersey Mike’s employees state that the olive oil blend is mostly vegetable oil. Restaurants use vegetable oil instead of olive oil to cut costs (since olive oil is pricey!).

If you would like to make the olive oil blend, simply mix one part olive oil with three parts canola oil (you can also use vegetable oil or soybean oil).

However, I urge you to use 100% olive oil instead of making the blend! Unlike vegetable oil, olive oil tastes delicious. I’d list other reasons but honestly, don’t you want to make the best subs at home?

Jersey Mike’s Oil and Vinegar Recipe

The guy at my neighborhood Jersey Mike restaurant calls this “The Juice”. I thought this was slang or a nickname, but it’s what Jersey Mike calls their oil and vinegar mixture!!! Turns out that “The Juice” is the key ingredient to what makes their subs so yummy.

This mixture consists of olive oil, red wine vinegar, and salt. It is SO darn delicious. I make this at home ALL the time and put it on not only tasty sub sandwiches but also on pasta salad. It adds a nice flavor!

To get more information on this, check out my Copycat Jersey Mike’s Oil and Vinegar Recipe. It is a homemade version that tastes IDENTICAL to “The Juice” that is served at the restaurant. Best of all, you can make this in your own kitchen.

Tips To Make Jersey Mike’s Subs At Home

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: For best results, use high quality and fresh ingredients. A sub is only as good as its ingredients. Make sure that the vegetables are fresh. No one wants to eat wilted lettuce.
  • Use Good Bread: Bread makes or breaks subs, sandwiches, and burgers! That is why you should ALWAYS use great tasting bread. Go to a bakery and buy any type of Italian roll. If you like to bake, you can make my rosemary parmesan bread or my Copycat Jimmy John’s Bread. Both recipes are great for sandwiches.
  • Add Additional Toppings: Do not be limited to the ingredient list of Mike’s Way. Feel free to add other ingredients such as cherry pepper relish, pickles, and banana peppers.
  • Packing a Sandwich For Later? Put oil and vinegar on the side: If you plan on making this sandwich for lunch or eating it hours after you make it, it is best to put the oil and vinegar mixture on the side. Adding it to the sub will make your sub soggy! No one wants a soggy sub.
