Replacing The Sleep Number Bed Controller/air Pump

Ding-dong the witch is dead -) Not only did our displays stop working, it would take maybe 40 or 50 presses of the up or down button to add or remove air from the mattress. We had it and weren’t going to fix the bed again so we went mattress shopping and found a wonderful 100% foam mattress at a local furniture store. What a happy day when we pulled the Sleep Number bed out, full writeup of what we bought here.

The digital LCD display on the controllers failed yet again and apparently Winnebago has dropped Sleep Number beds since the vendor was NOT at the 2012 Grand National Rally – we were looking for another replacement. The design and/or engineering of the hand-held controllers I have decided is and the next replacement will be a conventional mattress.

Our Horizon came standard with the Sleep Number bed and we have really enjoyed it for three years of intermittent use While attending the Winnebago Grand National Rally , Jane’s control starting missing LCD segments. Talk about perfect timing – the manufacturer was in attendance at the GNR and when I mentioned the display problem, he gave me a new controller/air pump unit. He said they were having some problems with the display in the RV environment and redesigned the display.

Head Or Foot Section Will Elevate But Will Not Return To Horizontal Position

• Base mechanism may be obstructed. Elevate base and check for obstruction. Remove obstruction.
• Head section may be too close to the wall.
• Headboard may be too close to the edge of the mattress. Verify a 1.5″ to 2″ distance between headboard brackets and mattress. Adjust if required.

Let’s Warm Up The Display

In the first photo you will see the infamous partial display fault. I did not unplug the controller when doing this. This was to save time.

Get your heat gun and adjust it to where it is too hot to put your hand in front of it. I used about 300F.

Now set the display on a surface that can take this heating up process. Let’s not start any fires. Slowly warm the screen until it becomes totally black. Do not heat the display up too fast as you can easily burst it. Right when the display turns completely black back off just a little and keep it black for about 15 seconds. Now as the display starts to cool start massaging it in a circular motion with both of your thumbs.

You most likely will not be successful in the first try. You should see and improvement as some of the segments will come back. Keep doing this process until the segments all appear in the display.

For testing the unit while disassembled lick your finger and use it to actuate the button pad and the unit will power up and the display should come on. I used this trick throughout the process to check my process.

Sleep Number Warranty Vs Ghost Smartbed Comparison

According to Sleep Number, they have so much confidence in their products quality that they offer awarranty of up to 15 years. The companys A+ BBB rating further enhances the warranty. This warranty period was reduced recently from the initial 25-year warranty.

Note: Sleep Number offers two distinct 15-year mattress warranties, one for what they term as Value Beds a.k.a Comfort mattresses and another one for 360 series Smart Beds. For the smart beds, the warranty covers a firmness control system and SleepIQ software and hardware.
