Ayy it’s gracie, and today i shalt be blogging about none other than one of the most common things in anime:
flip phones.
*le gaspu* i’ve actually never seen an aa blog on those cool ass japanese flip phones. like how you can just transfer emails, text people, while looking fashionable at the same time?? how could my iphone//android even begin to compare??
hold your gasps, because i’m about to teach y’all about japanese flip phones (which, are actually just normal flip phones, but apparently the whole japanese thing attracts the weeaboos). including the pro’s and con’s, what makes them so cool and popular, and where you can buy cute-ass cellphone accessories.
because lezbehonest, everyone wants some cute-ass cellphone charms//cases//etc.
so, without further ado, join me in indulging in cellphone paradise, minus the touch screen normal. Incase anyone was wondering, this is why i, for the most part, don’t do sophisticated^^.

So, what really makes these flip phones so popular? nobody is really sure when they're watching anime. flip phones seem inconvenient, useless, and frankly, unhelpful and not very "status worthy."
well, a long time ago Japan used to be the leading enterprise in cell phones. A company called NTT Docomo had released mobile internet browsing long before the USA could even design flip phones as sophisicated as the Japanese had.
So, what changed?
A company by the name of Softbank had decided to switch over to these new touch-screen iPhones in order to save their company. And from that, iPhones started taking over Japan, making it the “go-to” phone right now.
Flip phones nowadays in Japan are referred to as ガラケイ, or garakei. This word is not only the proper word for “cell phone” in Japanese, but also used as slang for uncool, out of date, cheap cell phones.

As some know, the birth rate in Japan is much lower than other countries. So, with the older generations playing a huge part in Japanese culture, there’s no need for a complicated touch screen phone. People are slowly switching back to the garakei, simply because it’s much easier to navagate and use, but also helpful for actual phone functions (such as calling or texting, rather than all of these apps that everyone’s obsessed with these days).
Another reason, is the price of garakei. These are much cheaper than your basic iPhone or touch screen. So, if all of these older generations and young people who don’t need more than a calling and texting function on their phones, why spend more on an iPhone when you can just buy a simple flip phone?
the third reason, is because of their charge rate. An iPhone can barely stay alive for say, 3-6 hours? Depending on how much you use it. But, some newer garakei models can hold charge for up to 710 hours (so almost an entire MONTH). Do you know how nice it would be to only have to worry about charging your phone for an entire month? Even I would consider switching to a flip phone for that reason, and start living off of an iPod.
And the last reason, is durability. You can throw your average garakei at a wall, have it go crashing on the floor, and it will still be totally fine. But, the second you drop your iPhone on the floor on accident, it’s all over. Your phone is dead. There is no chance of recovery.
So tbh, I think Japan knows what it’s doing by bringing back these garakei. After all, the newest model, the GRATINA2 can even be put under a running faucet (why would you do that? idk. But hey, that’s one way of announcing your durability over an iPhone).

Well, that concludes my blog on Japanese flip phones (or garakei, if you must use the proper term (; ). Hopefully the pretty gifs made this blog enjoyable, and the fact that my blogs are always highly enjoyable and awesome. Plus cute Japanese accessories make everything better in life.
Anyways, thanks for reading @ those of you who actually took the time to read this entire long-ass blog (trying a new method that involves me typing up amino blogs on my laptop, so not sure how long 3 pages in 10-pt font will turn out on the app??).
