What is pumpkin pie spice?

It’s a blend of delicious warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, all spice, nutmeg and cloves. Pumpkin pie spice is that one spice you’ll most often reach out for when baking is in full swing starting from fall all the way up until holiday baking.

The flavor combination of warm spices makes pumpkin pie and all-things-baked-with-pumpkin perfect-fit-for-fall!

What’s in pumpkin pie spice?

The most common spices used in pumpkin spice mix are:

Cinnamon, ginger, all spice, cloves and nutmeg. That’s all!

The recipe is customizable. For sharper flavor, amp up ginger and cloves. For softened cozier flavors, add more cinnamon.

Why homemade pumpkin pie spice?

Making your own spice blend mix has loads of benefits.

  1. Cheaper – don’t have to shell out hefty $, it’s cheaper to make your own.
  2. Customizable – Most store-bought pumpkin pie spice has the predominant cinnamon flavor. Balance the spices just right to work best for your palate.
  3. Homemade spice blends are fresher, flavors are best and tastier.
  4. Make just as much pumpkin pie spice as you need and store it in air-tight jars.
  5. Wide use – Add to pumpkin latte, sprinkle on hot chocolate, and use it in baking.

A bottle of nutmeg powder costs like $6 and a tiny bottle of clove powder works out like $7-8. Plus big fat chances are that you won’t end up using all of the ground clove or ground nutmeg for that matter.

I made my own clove, nutmeg powders. Whole nutmeg has longer shelf life and you can just buy a few and keep it in pantry. A mini grater is all you need to grate whole spices into ground spices.

To make clove powder, lightly roast cloves and blitz in spice blender. Sieve the ground mix to get fine powder and left over residues of cloves – don’t throw that away. Sprinkle the residues in curries.

How to make pumpkin pie spice?

Simply measure and add all the spices needed in bowl or glass jar.

Shake/stir to combine.

The ratio of the spices used can be customized. Balance the spices just right to work best for your palate. For sharper flavor, amp up ginger and cloves. For softened cozier flavors, add more cinnamon.
