Luis Enrique: 'This wasn't going to be easy'

Luis Enrique spoke to Canal+ after PSG's defeat: “That’s football. Sometimes it’s wonderful, and then other times, that’s how it goes. We’ll have to analyse the chances created by both teams. It was a difficult game.

"Ousmane (Dembele), with his way of defending, we knew he could do a job on Emre Can. And the three attackers against the three defenders, with a pivot. We wanted to block the ball into Füllkrug.

"Everybody knew that this wasn’t going to be easy. This is the semi-final of the Champions League. The dressing room is a bit down, especially after hitting the post twice. But we had our supporters pushing us on throughout the match. We must recognise that this is an exceptional stadium, with fans who know how to support their team."

Terzic: 'You have to earn your way to Wembley'

Edin Terzic spoke to DAZN after Dortmund's win: "It was a well-deserved win, a good team performance. We could have scored more goals, but so could they. That's why the result is OK from my point of view.

"We ran a lot, but that's necessary in a game like this. You have to earn your way to Wembley. All we need now is a draw in the second leg, but we also want to win next week. We have a small lead and a good opportunity."

Marquinhos: We have to take our chances

PSG captain Marquinhos, also speaking to Canal+, added: "It was a test of two teams who like to go forward, have the ball, and press. It was a physical test.

"We had a lot of chances, especially in the second half, and ones that you can’t miss if you want to qualify for the final of the Champions League. At home, we’re going to have to make sure we take them.

"It’s always difficult playing here. We knew how much of a contest it was going to be. One-nil, we’ve overcome it before, especially at home with our supporters.

"The Parc des Princes, our supporters. We know we can do a lot better than we’ve done today. We just have to take our chances when they come, and be more decisive, both offensively and defensively."

Hakimi: 'At home, it will be different'

Speaking to French broadcaster Canal+ after the match, Achraf Hakimi said: "We’re sad about the result. We didn’t take the chances we created, especially in the second half.

"We knew what Dortmund would do – the balls in behind. We needed to be mindful of that. It was something the coach had spoken to us about all week.

"At home, it will be different. With our fans, in our stadium, it will be completely different. I’ve got so much confidence in this team. The chances we created today, we’ll rectify that next week."

We know how hard it is for teams to come here, says Hummels

After speaking about the result, Hummels then touched on the impact of Dortmund's home fans.

"We know how hard it is for opponents to beat us here," he said. "I think the last defeat here in the Champions League was the quarter-finals against Man City (in April 2021) maybe. If you come to Dortmund, you know how hard it is.

"The problem is now we have to go to Paris, we know how hard it is to play there and I don't think I've ever won in Paris so it's a good time to win there for the first time.

"They're a really strong team, it will be a good atmosphere and we can really look forward to great game on Tuesday."

Jadon Sancho completed 12 dribbles tonight, the most by an English player in a Champions League match since Opta started recording the stat in 2003.

That's also the highest tally by a player in a UCL semi-final since Lionel Messi completed 16 in April 2008 against Manchester United.

Dortmund vs PSG live updates (45)

More fans of both teams, and some neutrals, are wading into the post-match reaction in our discussion tab here. So what are the opinions on who did well and badly?

Cristobal G opines: Dortmund ended looking really comfortable in this game, very impressive. Mendes had a really tough game dealing with Sancho, especially with Ryerson having tons of time and space to carry the ball and double up for most of the game.

Brian M says: What a game, Sancho and Hummels were fantastic.

And Besar D concludes: Sancho's back!

Hummels: It wasn't perfect but good to get a win

Dortmund vs PSG live updates (50)

Mats Hummels is one of few players still playing that was involved in Dortmund's last Champions League final in 2013 and he spoke to TNT Sports after the game.

"It was intense but it was a lot of fun to play in this stadium with the fans behind us," he said. "Everybody gave 100 per cent today and we really worked well as a group.

"We didn't play perfect, so it's good to see that we still got a good result against such a good team. It's always possible to have some improvement but we can very happy with the game and the result today."

Who lifts the trophy from here?

Dortmund were written off across the board coming into these semi-finals.

Yet they are the only team that will take a lead into next week's second legs.

They will still probably be seen as underdogs in this tie with PSG playing the second leg in front of their own fans, but it wasn't luck that saw them through tonight.

Whoever wins the tie between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will go into the final as big favourites, but these two teams will be tough to beat at Wembley if they get there.

Hope for PSG

This was only the fourth time that PSG have been shutout all season, and the first that resulted in a loss as opposed to a 0-0 draw.

The good news for PSG is that they have progressed from two of their last four Champions League knockout ties in which they lost the first leg, the first of those coming against Dortmund themselves in 2020.

Discussion tab: Why couldn't Pochettino use Maatsen?

Dortmund vs PSG live updates (65)

Fans are posting their full-time thoughts in our discussion tab at the top of the page and clickable here.

Johnny R says: Can someone explain why (Chelsea manager) Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t utilise Ian Maatsen? He seems a perfect up and coming left-back 🤷‍♂️

Javier D adds: Dortmund is out (I hope I am wrong). It's impossible to think that after so many chances they can't score a second goal. The game at Paris will be a different story, they had to take advantage today!

Antoine B agrees, posting: Would be surprised Dortmund doesn’t get steamrolled in le Parc des Princes.

The Athletic's Carl Anka also feels this way, saying: I can't see PSG failing to score at home. Dortmund needed a second goal in this first leg.

Agree? Disagree? Let us know!

Instant reaction to Dortmund's win

This was meant to be Kylian Mbappe’s stage, but instead it was journeyman striker Niclas Fullkrug who proved the difference tonight.

The Athletic’s Peter Rutzler, Sebastian Stafford-Bloor, Thom Harris and Elias Burke have broken down the biggest talking points from this match, taking a look at:

  • Functional Fullkrug is flying in the Champions League
  • Why do PSG struggle with long balls?
  • Is Sancho back to his best?
  • How costly will PSG’s misses prove?
  • Did the hard-working Adeyemi silence critics?

Follow the link below to check out their breakdown!

More colourful phrases from Ray Hudson

Lots of characteristically colourful language from CBS co-commentator Ray Hudson during the second half, here are a few of the "best".

He bemoaned the "sacred geometry of chance" after PSG hit the post twice in quick succession.

After missed opportunities, Hudson described a "fish up a tree finish", a "garlic milkshake of a finish" and Ousmane Dembele's "right foot turning into a size nine jellyfish".

At the end of the game, he concluded: "This is Woodstock, we had Jimi Hendrix and The Who... football is one of life's greatest mysteries".

I'd say some of those metaphors are one of life's greatest mysteries!

Fifth clean sheet for Dortmund

Dortmund vs PSG live updates (85)

That was Borussia Dortmund's fifth clean sheet in the Champions League this season, the most in the tournament.

Yes, it came courtesy of some wasteful PSG finishing and some help from the woodwork, but that may prove crucial come next week.

With his goal in the 36th minute, Niclas Fullkrug has become only the third Borussia Dortmund player to register at least three goals and three assists in a single season in the Champions League.

He joins Stéphane Chapuisat in 1996-97 (3 goals, 3 assists) and Tomáš Rosický in 2002-03 (3 goals, 4 assists).

Moment of the match: Mbappe and Hakimi hitting the post

Dortmund vs PSG live updates (95)

Getty Images

Like they did in the first leg of the quarter-final against Barcelona, PSG flew out of the blocks in the second half.

And they would have got themselves on level terms had it not been for the base of Gregor Kobel’s post.

First, Kylian Mbappe angled an almost-perfect curling effort towards the far corner before seeing it strike the inside of the upright and come back to him. A couple of seconds later, Achraf Hakimi aimed for the other corner but met the same result.

Two very fortunate bounces for the home side and despair for the visitors.
